What is the skin microbiome and why does it matter?

The skin microbiome is the community of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and others) that naturally live on the skin surface. They're a natural part of healthy skin and contribute to surface balance — considered part of the skin's natural defence.

A microbiome-friendly approach avoids straining this balance. Harsh cleansers, excessive antibacterial products and pH-disrupting formulas can affect it. Gentle, pH-balanced, barrier-friendly products help preserve it.

Barrier and microbiome are closely linked: a healthy barrier supports a balanced microbiome and vice versa. Gentle-care principles support both. This is an area of ongoing research; consult a physician for your personal needs.
